So with hunger sated and evening coming soon we set out to Arnastapi, we have been fighting persistant AT&T issues with our phones resulting in the loss of data usage. We have been relying on maps and an gps unit in icelandic that came with our car, or should I say our diesel Kia 4x4 of death! So down the nicely paved highway we went and the gps said to turn off onto route number 570 we thought nothing of it. Little did we know, but soon to find out, we were on an F route, a notorious designation for roads that require 4 wheel drive. They are known to have no bridges and fording of rivers and streams may be required.. So up we went into the fog and the unknown.

This is the nice part...

we began to get more nervous as the road got trickier but luckily we were never required to ford a stream as our little Kia was woefully inadequate for such an endeavor. As we approached the summit bad weather came in and we were navigating more by gps for turns than being able to see, but thanks to our cool heads and Northwestern upbringings we made it through ok to the other side just at dark.

Almost through you can see the Ocean in the distance as we follow a large glacier vehicle on a rickety flat bed down the last the last 2 kilometers..

Finally arriving at Arnastapi, we were so happy to be alive and have a nice place to sleep for the night in the shadow of an awesome extinct volcano we'll talk more about tomorrow!
Tmobile has international plan included with the data it's been great over seas so far, but here in the states meh
ReplyDeleteHope You don't get a crazy data bill
I actually love that road...or, I guess really the idea of it. I'm not there, and don't have to drive it!
